VICKIS SPOTLIGHT - The official e-newsletter of Royal Caribbean Internationals Vicki Freed - VOLUME 26 | June 2013

In my previous issue of Spotlight, I told you all about my trip to the Ellen Show with my son Brent. We've been hanging out a lot lately because he's heading to college very soon.

With my last child leaving "the nest," I've been reflecting a lot on the time we've shared together as a family. It flies fast. In the last ten years especially, travel has become even more important to us. Our vacations bring us all together even when we've spread far and wide to colleges and careers.

My "kids" are now true adults. And our vacations have grown up, too. When they were in their teens, my kids started taking a more active role in our vacation planning — and it just made our adventures even better. That's why, when working with clients with grown children, I recommend a conversation with "the kids" to qualify them, too. Get them involved! Though they have good intentions, parents may not be the best interpreters of what late-teens or college-age kids want out of the vacation.

Something else I've come to regard as a must-have: a private shore excursion. Now that my kids are older, I want to invest more in the destination experience — knowing that they'll truly understand, appreciate and value it. Hands down, these excursions are the most vivid and valued memories from our family vacations. They're exclusive, custom tailored, and EASY. Our Shore Ex team handles all the arrangements! Your clients will rave about it after. Check out my Facebook album about my family's recent cruise and private excursion in Naples, Italy.

Finally, another great tradition that comes with having grown kids is family dinner in a specialty restaurant. I used to beg my kids to clean their plates...now I can't keep them out of Chops Grille. It's a really nice shared moment before everyone heads out to nighttime adventures. If you have family clients with children entering their teens, I highly suggest recommending this as a new family tradition!

Happy selling!
